Imagine the kids' faces when they get to carve a Jack-o'-lantern they grew entirely themselves! You don't need a massive farm field to grow pumpkins. With the right variety, you can grow a fantastic mini pumpkin patch right on your patio.
By starting in early summer, you give these thirsty, hungry plants enough time to grow plump and turn a beautiful bright orange just in time for October 31st.
What You Need:
- Mini Pumpkin Seeds: Look for small varieties like 'Jack Be Little', 'Baby Bear', or 'Munchkin'. They survive the damp Irish summer much better than giant varieties!
- A Very Large Pot: An old half-barrel or a 40L plastic tub with drainage holes.
- Rich Compost: Pumpkins are hungry! Mix your peat-free compost with some well-rotted manure if you have it.
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Sow the Seed: Plant your seeds on their edge (not flat!) in a small pot indoors around late May. This stops water from sitting on top of the seed and rotting it.
- Move to the Big Pot: Once the plant has 3 or 4 big, rough leaves, plant it gently into its final, large outdoor pot. Place it in the sunniest, warmest spot you have.
- Feed and Water: Pumpkins drink a lot! Water them heavily at the base of the plant every day during summer, and feed them with liquid tomato feed once a week once the little pumpkins appear.
- Harvest Time: Leave the pumpkins on the vine until the stems turn brown and woody in October. Cut them off, wipe them down, and get carving!
🌧️ The Damp Leaf Warning
Because Irish summers can be quite wet, pumpkins are prone to a white dust on their leaves called "Powdery Mildew". To prevent this, always water the soil at the base of the plant, and try to keep the leaves as dry as possible!
