Calling all Garden Detectives! This week, we are going on a treasure hunt—right inside our recycling bins and kitchen cupboards. Here in Ireland, we want to raise clever, sustainable kids who think critically about waste. Encouraging kids to turn "trash" to "treasure" helps them see products through new eyes. It's not just about saving money; it's about being kinder to our planet and understanding that we don't always need to buy new things to have fun in the garden. Best of all, these projects can be done indoors or outdoors, in any season!

What You Need (The Treasure Hunt!):

• Kitchen Castoffs: Egg cartons, plastic yogurt pots, clear food containers with lids, small glass jars.
• Household Recycling: Cardboard boxes (cereal/delivery), empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls, old newspapers or scrap paper.
• Crafty Bits: Scissors (kid-safe), non-toxic glue, potting compost, seeds, and paints.

Step-by-Step Mission Guide:

1. Make Your Own Seed-Starting Trays: Instead of buying plastic trays, look in the kitchen! Egg cartons or yogurt containers (with holes punched in the bottom for drainage) are perfect. To-go food containers with clear lids even work as mini greenhouses to hold humidity in.
2. Design Cut Flower Arrangements: Save those small glass jars! Baby food jars, pickle jars, or small candle jars make excellent containers for sharing little cut flower bouquets from your garden with neighbours or teachers.
3. Construct a Garden Activity Box: Decorate an old shoe box to store fun supplies like art materials, magnifying glasses, and your garden journals. Keeping supplies in one spot makes it easy to grab-and-go at garden time.
4. Install Weed Block in the Garden: Cardboard boxes are an environmentally sound way to control weeds. Lay flattened cardboard boxes at the bottom of raised beds under the soil, or along pathways under mulch. Unlike plastic weed cloth, the cardboard naturally decomposes into the soil.
5. Craft Some Garden Observation Binoculars: Turn garden time into an adventure! Make binoculars from empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls. They are a simple, fun tool to help young gardeners focus their eyes on interesting bugs or flowers.
6. Create Seed Paper: Recycle old scrap paper by turning it into pulp, adding flower seeds, and pressing it into new shapes. These make fantastic handmade gifts to share!
7. Make Greeting Cards: Save the beautiful pictures from old seed catalogs that arrive in the post. Cut them out and glue them onto blank card stock to make your own unique greeting cards for friends and family.
