Welcome to WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Some plants take months to grow fruits and vegetables, but today we are looking at a lightning-fast champion: Cress!
Cress is one of the easiest, most satisfying plants for children to grow. You don't even need soilβjust a bright windowsill and a little bit of water. In less than a week, you'll have a mini forest of spicy green leaves ready for your lunchbox!
π΅οΈββοΈ The Detective's Speed Rule
Cress seeds are packed with food storage. As soon as they touch moisture, they wake up instantly and race to reach the light!
What You Need:
- A Packet of Cress Seeds: Available at any local Irish garden centre or supermarket.
- Bedding Material: A folded sheet of kitchen paper towel, a layer of cotton wool, or even clean empty eggshells.
- A Shallow Container or Plate: To hold your paper or cotton wool.
- A Water Sprayer or Small Spoon: To keep things damp without drowning your seeds.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- Prep Your Bed: Lay your damp kitchen paper towel or cotton wool flat inside your shallow container or plate. Make sure it's damp like a wrung-out sponge, but not swimming in water.
- Sow the Seeds: Sprinkle your cress seeds generously across the damp surface. Try to spread them out evenly so they have room to stretch.
- Find a Sunny Spot: Place your container on a bright indoor windowsill (like the kitchen or bedroom) where it can catch the daylight.
- Water & Watch: Check your cress every day. Keep the paper towel moist by sprinkling a few drops of water on it whenever it starts to dry out.
- The 7-Day Harvest: By Day 3 you will see tiny white roots and green shoots; by Day 7, your cress will stand tall and proud (about 2 to 3 inches high). Snip them with kitchen scissors and sprinkle them over a cheese or egg sandwich for a peppery crunch!
π§ Fun Fact
Cress grows so quickly that you can actually measure its height with a ruler every single morning and record the results in your nature journal!
