Welcome to WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Today we are combining arts and crafts with ecological action in our Create & Grow series by making your very own Wildflower Seed Bombs!
Bees and butterflies across Ireland need plenty of native wildflowers for food. Seed bombs are a fun, ancient trick to scatter seeds across tricky garden corners or school yards without digging up the lawn.
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Protection Rule
The clay protects the seeds from hungry birds and ants until the next Irish rain shower softens the shell and helps them sprout into life!
What You Need:
- Air-Dry Pottery Clay or Red Potting Clay: To form the outer body of the bomb.
- Rich Peat-Free Compost: To give baby seedlings a nutritious start.
- Native Irish Wildflower Seeds: Packets containing pollinator-friendly favorites like Cornflower, Poppy, and Oxeye Daisy.
- A Splash of Water: To help bind the ingredients together.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- Mix the Base: In a mixing bowl, combine 5 parts pottery clay with 1 part compost. Add a tiny splash of water and knead it together like bread dough until it's smooth.
- Add the Seeds: Flatten your clay mixture slightly and sprinkle your native wildflower seeds right into the middle. Fold the clay over them.
- Roll the Bombs: Pinch off small walnut-sized pieces and roll them firmly between your hands into neat little balls.
- Dry Them Out: Leave your seed bombs on a tray in a sunny spot for 24 hours until they are dry and hard.
- Launch Time: Head out into your garden, school yard, or pots and toss your seed bombs into empty soil spaces. Wait for the Irish rain to do the rest!
🧠 Fun Fact
Wildflower seed bombs support the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan by helping create stepping stones of food across towns and countryside where bees can forage safely!
