Welcome to WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Today we are launching our Minibeast Safari series to track down one of the most common—and surprising—creatures hiding in Irish gardens.
If you lift up a heavy flowerpot, a damp garden stone, or a rotting log in your backyard, you are almost guaranteed to see a flurry of little grey armored critters scurrying away. Today, we are putting on our safari hats to investigate woodlice!
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Crustacean Rule
Woodlice aren't insects! They are land crustaceans, meaning they are actual land-dwelling cousins of crabs, lobsters, and shrimp that breathe using special gill-like structures!
What You Need:
- A Magnifying Glass: To inspect their segmented armor plates.
- Your Nature Journal & Pencil: To sketch your findings and count your discoveries.
- A Gentle Hand: Ready to carefully lift and replace garden stones without harming any minibeasts.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- The Stone Flip: Head out into your garden or school yard and gently lift a flat stone or piece of wood resting on damp soil.
- Observe the Scurry: Watch how quickly woodlice dash for darkness. They hate bright light and dry air because they need moisture to breathe.
- Test the Roll: Look closely at some species (often called "roly-polies" or pill bugs). When gently touched, they curl up into a tight, armored sphere to protect themselves from predators!
- Return Their Home: Carefully lower the stone back down exactly where you found it so their dark, damp habitat stays safe and cozy.
- Record Your Safari: Open your nature journal and draw an armored woodlouse with its multiple leg pairs.
🧠 Fun Fact
Woodlice are nature's ultimate recyclers! They eat decaying leaves and dead plants, turning them back into rich, healthy soil nutrients for your garden flowers.
