Welcome to our latest WiggleWorms Daily Mission! Today we are diving into our Smart Rainy Day Ideas series. When the Irish weather brings heavy rain and keeps us indoors, it doesn't mean our gardening projects have to stop!
Today, we are building a transparent Indoor Mini-Greenhouse on a sunny window. It's a foolproof way to watch seeds wake up, drink water, and push out roots without needing any soil or dirty pots.
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Greenhouse Rule
A greenhouse traps heat and moisture inside, creating a mini water cycle. Water evaporates from the damp paper towel, turns into tiny droplets on the plastic bag, and "rains" right back down!
What You Need:
- A Clear Plastic Zip-Lock Bag: Clean and sealable.
- A Paper Towel: Folded to fit snugly inside the bag.
- Large Bean Seeds: Such as broad beans or runner beans (which sprout quickly and clearly).
- Water & Sticky Tape: To dampen your towel and secure your bag to the glass.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- Dampen the Paper Towel: Wet your folded paper towel with water until it feels like a wrung-out sponge—damp, but not dripping wet. Slide it inside the zip-lock bag.
- Tuck in the Seeds: Place 2 or 3 bean seeds between the wet paper towel and the clear plastic side of the bag so you can see them clearly from the outside.
- Seal and Hang: Zip the bag shut tightly to trap the moisture inside. Use sticky tape to attach the bag to a bright indoor windowsill.
- Watch the Magic: Over the next 3 to 5 days, check your window greenhouse. Watch tiny white roots (radicles) push downward and green shoots reach upward!
- Record Your Observations: Open your nature journal and draw a daily progress report of your germinating bean seeds.
🧠 Fun Fact
Seeds have all the food they need stored tightly inside their seed coat to kickstart their first roots before they even need soil nutrients!
