Welcome to our latest WiggleWorms Daily Mission! Today we are visiting our School Garden Hub to honor the absolute VIP of our website name: the humble earthworm!
They don't have eyes, ears, or legs, but earthworms are quite literally the master builders of our planet's gardens. Without them, soil would become hard like concrete and plants would struggle to grow.
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Breathing Rule
Earthworms don't have lungs! They breathe right through their moist skin. That is why they crawl up onto paths and lawns when heavy Irish rain floods their underground tunnels.
Why Earthworms Are Garden Superstars:
- Living Ploughs: As they burrow through the earth, they create tiny tunnels that let air and rainwater sink deep down to nourish plant roots.
- Compost Champions: They eat decaying leaves and organic waste, digesting them and producing nutrient-packed fertilizer called "castings" (garden gold!).
- Super Senses: Even though they are blind, they can easily tell the difference between light and dark using special light-sensitive cells on their skin.
Wiggle Challenge: The Soil Detective Search
- Head out into your school garden, yard, or flowerbeds after a rain shower and look closely at the soil surface.
- Spot a tiny coiled pile of soil—this is an earthworm casting showing you where underground workers have been busy!
- Gently lift a spadeful of rich compost or topsoil to see how many earthworms you can find wriggling safely in the dark.
- Open your nature journal and draw a cross-section of an underground worm tunnel network.
🧠 Fun Fact
Charles Darwin spent nearly 40 years studying earthworms, proving that these small creatures shaped history by turning over almost the entire top layer of soil on Earth!
