Welcome to WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Today we are exploring our Garden-to-Plate series with a brilliant kitchen-science experiment that proves food doesn't only come from supermarkets!
Next time you are helping prepare dinner in the kitchen, don't throw away the white root ends of your spring onions (scallions). With just a clean glass jar and a splash of water, you can watch them magically regrow brand-new green stalks right on your windowsill!
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Regrowth Rule
The bottom root plate of an onion contains stored energy and living cells that instantly reactivate when placed in water, pushing new green leaves straight up toward the light!
What You Need:
- Spring Onion Root Ends: About 2 to 3 inches of the white root base left over from cooking.
- A Small Glass Jar or Egg Cup: To hold your onion scraps upright.
- Fresh Water: Just enough to cover the bottom roots without drowning the top.
- A Bright Windowsill: To catch the daily Irish sunlight.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- Save the Base: Ask an adult to trim your spring onions for cooking, making sure to save the bottom white root ends (with the little hairy roots attached).
- Set Up the Jar: Place your spring onion roots upright inside your small glass jar or egg cup.
- Add Water: Pour a small amount of clean water into the jar so that it covers only the hairy roots at the very bottom.
- The Window Watch: Place your jar on a bright indoor windowsill. Change the water every couple of days to keep it fresh.
- Watch Them Grow: Within 24 to 48 hours, you will see bright green shoots pushing out from the top. In about a week, you'll have brand-new green shoots ready to snip and sprinkle over your lunch!
🧠 Fun Fact
Regrowing kitchen scraps is a fantastic zero-waste habit supported by Green-Schools programmes across Ireland because it reduces food waste and teaches kids how plants regenerate!
