DIY Wildflower Seed Bombs 🌸
Published on Early Summer • By The Wiggle Worms
It's lashing rain outside, the kids are bouncing off the walls, and you need a garden project that happens strictly at the kitchen table. Enter: Seed Bombs!
This is delightfully messy, feels like baking, and gives you something fun to throw into the garden borders when the sun finally comes back out.
The Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Peat-Free Compost
- ½ cup of Potter's Clay: Air-dry clay or powdered clay from a craft shop works perfectly. This binds the bomb together.
- Irish Native Wildflower Seeds: Make sure they are native! Mixes with Irish Poppies, Cornflowers, and Oxeye Daisies are fantastic for local bees.
- A little water
How to Make Them:
- Mix the Dry Stuff: In a big mixing bowl, let the kids mix the compost, clay, and a good handful of seeds together using their hands.
- Add the Rain: Slowly add water, a few drops at a time. You want the mixture to feel like thick, sticky dough. If it gets too wet, just add a bit more compost.
- Roll the Bombs: Grab small pinches of the mixture and roll them into balls about the size of a golf ball or a walnut.
- Let them Dry: Place the seed bombs on a baking tray lined with newspaper. Leave them on a sunny windowsill for a few days until they are rock hard.
🎯 Ready, Aim, Throw!
Once dry, you can throw these bombs onto bare patches of soil in your garden. The clay protects the seeds from hungry birds and mice. When the next heavy Irish rain comes, the clay will melt, and the seeds will sprout!
