Build a Mini Wormery (Meet the Real Wiggle Worms!) 🐛
Published on Early Summer • By The Wiggle Worms
Earthworms are the most important workers in any Irish garden. They eat dead leaves and turn them into incredible, nutrient-rich soil. To show kids exactly how hard these little guys work underground, we are going to build a see-through mini wormery!
What You Need:
- An empty, clear 2-litre plastic bottle (top cut off by an adult)
- Sand
- Damp garden soil
- A handful of dead leaves or veggie peels
- Black paper or a dark towel
- The Stars of the Show: 3 or 4 earthworms carefully dug up from the garden!
Building the Worm Hotel:
- Layer it Up: Start filling the plastic bottle with alternating layers of damp soil and sand. Make each layer about 2 inches thick. The contrasting colours will help you see the worms at work!
- Add the Roof: Leave a couple of inches of space at the top. Add a layer of dead leaves, old lettuce, or potato peels. This is the worms' dinner.
- Welcome the Guests: Gently drop your worms onto the top layer. Watch as they quickly burrow down into the dark to hide.
- Keep it Dark: Worms hate the light! Wrap the outside of the bottle in black paper or an old towel so it is pitch black inside. Leave it in a cool, quiet place indoors.
👀 The Big Reveal!
After a few days, unwrap the black paper. You will see that the worms have mixed all the neat layers of sand and soil together, creating tunnels right against the plastic! Important: After a week of observing, be sure to release your worms back into the garden where they belong.
