Foolproof Carrots in Pots 🥕
Carrots are a magical crop for kids to grow. The green, feathery tops give you a hint of what's happening, but pulling them up to reveal the bright orange root is a fantastic surprise! The trick to perfect Irish carrots? Grow them in deep pots rather than the ground.
Irish garden soil is often full of stones. When a carrot hits a stone, it splits into funny, alien-like shapes. While "wonky veg" is great, if you want straight, crunchy carrots, a deep pot filled with soft compost is the way to go.
What You Need:
- A very deep pot (at least 30cm deep) or an old plastic bucket with drainage holes drilled in the bottom.
- Peat-free compost mixed with a few handfuls of sand.
- Carrot Seeds: Look for a variety called "Early Nantes" - they grow quickly!
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Fill the Pot: Fill your deep pot almost to the top with the compost and sand mix. The sand makes the soil nice and loose for the roots to push through.
- Draw the Lines: Ask the kids to use a stick (or their finger) to draw a shallow line across the top of the soil.
- Sprinkle the Seeds: Carrot seeds are tiny! Carefully sprinkle them into the line. Don't worry if they are a bit crowded; we will sort that out later.
- Cover and Water: Lightly cover the seeds with a tiny bit more compost. Water gently using a watering can with a "rose" (the sprinkler attachment) so you don't wash the seeds away.
- The Tricky Part (Thinning): When the seedlings are a few inches tall, you need to pull out some of the weaker ones so the strongest ones have space to grow fat.
🪰 The Carrot Fly Warning
The Carrot Fly is a pesky bug that smells crushed carrot leaves and comes to lay eggs. Always do your "thinning" in the evening when the flies are less active, and water the pot immediately afterwards to wash away the smell!
