WEEK 7 MISSION: THE SALAD BOWL HARVEST!
Greetings, Garden Detectives! By now, our garden should be looking like a lush, green jungle. This week, our mission is all about the "Salad Cycle." We aren't just picking food; we are learning the secret to making our salad greens grow back over and over again. It’s time to harvest and refresh our patch!
The "Cut-and-Come-Again" Magic
Did you know that some plants, like lettuce, spinach, and rocket, are like magic? If you pick them the right way, they just keep growing new leaves! We call this "Cut-and-Come-Again." Instead of pulling the whole plant, we only take what we need for our lunch.
Step 1: The Master Harvester Technique
Let's harvest without hurting the plant's feelings!
- Use Scissors: Grab a pair of clean kitchen scissors.
- Trim the Outer Leaves: Only cut the big, outer leaves of your lettuce or spinach plants. Leave the tiny, baby leaves in the center alone—that is the "heart" of the plant that will grow into next week's dinner!
- Clean and Crisp: Wash your leaves in a bowl of cold water to get rid of any garden dirt. Your harvest will be the crunchiest, freshest salad you've ever tasted.
Step 2: Resowing for Late Summer
Because the weather is still lovely and warm, we can sow more seeds to replace what we have eaten.
- Clear the Gaps: If you've pulled up any finished crops (like radishes), clear away the weeds to make a fresh space.
- Sow Fast Crops: Sow another row of radishes or rocket right now. In July, they grow super fast because the soil is nice and warm. You'll be picking them before the month is out!
Step 3: The "Green Leaf" Inspection
While you are harvesting, keep your detective eyes peeled for hungry guests.
- Check for Holes: If you see little holes in your leaves, it means a caterpillar or slug has had a snack. If you find the culprit, gently move them to a different part of the garden (or your bug hotel!).
- Stay Alert: Keeping your salad patch clean and tidy makes it harder for pests to hide.
Did You Know?
Plants "breathe" through their leaves! They take in carbon dioxide (the stuff we breathe out) and turn it into oxygen (the stuff we need to breathe). By growing a healthy salad patch, you are literally helping to keep the air around your house fresh and clean!

THE SALAD BOWL HARVEST

🎯 MISSION OBJECTIVE:
Your goal is to master the "Cut-and-Come-Again" technique. We must harvest our salad greens without damaging the plant, clear space for new seeds, and conduct a thorough pest inspection.
🎒 GEAR REQUIRED:
- ✅ Clean Kitchen Scissors
- ✅ A Harvesting Basket or Bowl
- ✅ Seed Packets (Rocket, Radish, or Lettuce)
- ✅ A "Detective's Log" (Notebook & Pen)
📝 FIELD INSTRUCTIONS:
- The Heart Check: Identify your lettuce/spinach plants. Only cut the large, mature outer leaves. Do NOT touch the baby leaves in the center!
- The Harvest: Use scissors to make a clean cut at the base of the stem. Collect your greens and rinse them in cool water.
- The Gap-Filler: Identify bare spots in your soil. Sprinkle your new seeds, cover lightly with compost, and pat down.
- The Pest Patrol: Inspect every leaf! If you find slugs or aphids, move them to the compost or bug hotel.
