Calling all Garden Detectives! This week, we are swapping our trowels for camera lenses. Photography is a brilliant way to slow down and look closely at our Irish gardens. When young gardeners search for photo-ready subjects, they practice sharp observation and learn how to document nature—skills that help with any science exploration!

Before snapping pictures, make a simple "viewfinder" frame out of a piece of cardboard with a 4x6 inch window cut out. Walk around the garden and look at flowers, ferns, or vegetable patches through the frame. Notice how moving closer or further away changes the story of your picture!

What You Need:

• A Camera or Smartphone: Any digital device with a camera works brilliantly for this mission.
• A Cardboard Viewfinder: A piece of thick cardboard with a 4x6 inch window cut out to frame your shots like a pro.
• Photo Checklist & Pencils: To track your scavenger hunt finds and record your detective notes.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Find Your Frame: Take your cardboard viewfinder outdoors. Look through the window to isolate a single flower, a fern leaf, or a buzzing insect, cutting out distractions like parked cars or garden sheds in the background.
2. The Photo Safari Scavenger Hunt: Grab your camera and hunt for photo clues! Snap a picture matching every color of the rainbow, a close-up of a bumblebee on a wildflower, or a wacky-shaped vegetable hiding in the patch.
3. Watch Fruit Form: Pick an open strawberry or pea flower, gently tie a piece of colored string around its stem to mark it, and take photos every few days to watch it transform into fruit!
4. Show Off Your Gallery: Print out your favorites to create a family scrapbook, or tape them onto thick card stock to make homemade note cards for friends and family.
