Welcome to WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Today we are diving into one of the most famous food-growing traditions in Ireland: growing potatoes!
You don't need a huge garden allotment or a tractor to grow potatoes. With just a clean bucket, some good compost, and a certified seed potato, you can create an underground treasure hunt right on your patio or school yard.
🕵️♀️ The Detective's Sprout Rule
Seed potatoes aren't regular potatoes from the kitchen vegetable basket—they are specially grown, disease-free tubers chosen to give your garden the best possible start!
What You Need:
- A Clean Plastic Bucket: About 10 to 20 litres in size, with several drainage holes drilled carefully into the bottom.
- Peat-Free Compost or Rich Soil: To fill your bucket and nourish the growing tubers.
- Certified Seed Potatoes: 2 or 3 healthy seed potatoes (ideally pre-sprouted or "chitted").
- Watering Can: To keep the soil damp like a wrung-out sponge.
Step-by-Step Mission Guide:
- Layer the Base: Put about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) of rich compost at the bottom of your bucket.
- Plant the Potato: Place 2 or 3 seed potatoes on top of the soil with their sprouts (eyes) pointing upward towards the sky.
- Cover Them Up: Cover the potatoes with another few inches of compost and water them gently.
- The "Earthing Up" Trick: As green stem shoots grow up and reach about 6 inches tall, cover them halfway up with more soil. Repeat this as they grow until the bucket is nearly full! This tricks the plant into growing more potatoes all along the buried stem.
- The Grand Harvest: After a few months, when the green leaves start to turn yellow and die back, tip your bucket upside down onto a tarp and dig through the soil to find your buried treasure!
🧠 Fun Fact
Potatoes belong to the nightshade family! While the underground tubers are delicious to eat, the green leaves and stems above ground are poisonous and should never be eaten.
