Welcome to our WiggleWorms Daily Missions! Today we are launching our Pollinator Patrol series, stepping outside to look at one of the most important jobs in nature: pollination!
Have you ever watched a bumblebee land on a flower? It looks like they are just stopping for a quick drink, but they are actually taking part in a massive secret mission that keeps our planet fed.
๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ The Detective's Pollinator Rule
Bees don't visit flowers just to look prettyโthey are looking for two specific things: sweet liquid food called nectar and protein-rich dust called pollen!
What You Need to Know:
- The Nectar Bar: Flowers produce sugary nectar deep inside their petals. Bees drink this energy juice and carry it back to their nests to feed baby bees.
- The Pollen Dust: As a bee climbs inside a flower, powdery yellow pollen sticks all over its fuzzy legs and furry coat.
- The Magic Delivery: When the dusty bee flies to the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off. This process is called pollination, and it's how plants make seeds, berries, and apples!
Wiggle Challenge: The Two-Minute Bee Watch
- Find a flowering plant, bush, or even a patch of dandelions in your garden or school grounds.
- Stand completely still and quiet near the flowers for two whole minutes.
- Count how many bees or buzzing insects come to visit. Do they have fuzzy yellow coats? Are they carrying yellow saddlebags of pollen on their legs?
- Open your nature journal and draw what you see!
๐ง Fun Fact
One third of the food we eat depends on pollinators like bees. Without them, we wouldn't have strawberries, apples, or tomatoes!
