The Hedgerow & Orchard Hunt 🍏

Children gathering wild blackberries and apples in an Irish garden and country lane

Calling all Garden Detectives! As August gently rolls into late summer, Irish country lanes and garden edges come alive with natural treasure. This week, our mission takes us on a wild foraging safari to discover plump blackberries and early garden apples ready for a sweet harvest!

πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ The Detective's Foraging Rule

Always check with an adult before tasting anything growing wild in hedgerows. Remember to pick berries from above knee-height so they stay clean, and always leave plenty behind for local birds and hedgehogs!

What You Need:

  • A Small Collection Basket or Tub: To carry your freshly picked fruits without squishing them.
  • Long Sleeves & Trousers: Essential protective gear for navigating blackberry bramble thorns!
  • Clean Water: To wash your harvest thoroughly before any tasting begins.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. The Blackberry Safari: Hunt along sunny garden boundaries and country lanes for deep, dark purple blackberries. If they pop off the stem easily with a gentle tug, they are perfectly ripe!
  2. The Early Apple Check: Inspect backyard apple trees (like early Irish varieties such as Discovery). Gently cup an apple in your hand, lift it up, and give a little twistβ€”if it detaches easily with its stalk intact, it's ready!
  3. The Smell Test & Count: Bring your harvest back to the kitchen table. Smell the sweet, fruity aroma and count your treasures before washing them.
  4. Kitchen Celebration: Turn your wild harvest into a delicious family dessert, or pop them into morning porridge for a true taste of late-summer Ireland.

🧠 Did You Know?

Blackberries turn red before they turn black! A red berry means it is still packed with sour juices and needs a few more days of Irish sunshine to become sweet.
