Gardens may be thriving in the sunshine, but August’s dry conditions are putting serious pressure on our plants. The top priority for gardeners this month is smart water conservation to keep every green corner of the patch happy and healthy!
💧 The Golden Rule of Watering
Always water early in the morning or late at night to cut evaporation and give plants the best possible chance to absorb moisture. Use watering cans rather than hoses to focus directly on what really needs attention!
Top Jobs for August Heat:
- Containers & Baskets: Hanging baskets, pots, and window boxes may need daily watering in this weather. Remember, sink or basin water can be safely reused on these containers once diluted!
- Trees, Shrubs & Hedges: Newly planted items (anything put in since February) may show stress through wilting or drooping leaves. Give them a deep soak once a week rather than a light, frequent sprinkle to drive roots deep down.
- Weeding & Mulching: Remove weeds to reduce competition for water, and apply a thick layer of bark mulch or well-rotted manure to lock moisture tightly into the soil.
- Protecting Lawns: Raise your mower height and leave clippings right on the grass to naturally shade the roots. Don't worry—the sward will bounce right back once regular Irish rain returns!
- Veg Patch Defense: Keep a sharp eye out for potato blight, protect your brassicas from white butterflies using netting or sprays, and keep tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers evenly watered to prevent splitting.
Looking Ahead to Autumn
For those planning ahead, August is also the ideal time to prep your soil for September lawn seeding and start browsing spring bulbs as they begin arriving in garden centres!
